Mug Rugs + Mug Treats

Mug Rugs + Mug Treats

Is it just me, or does winter seem like a drag once the holidays are over?  The short, cold days could definitely use some cheering up! These Mug Rugs are a quick sew and use only a handful of scraps!  Once they're sewn up, they're the perfect excuse for a nice warm treat... and I've got you covered there too!  Sew up all three patterns and indulge all at once or over a couple of days, there's no judgement here!  This tutorial features the wintery, yet cozy, Wild At Heart Collection by Lori Whitlock.

**These tutorials assume 1/4" seam allowance, and knowledge of basting, quilting, and binding.

Three Windows
Materials:
Windows: 3) 2.5" squares
Top Fabric: 1) 2"x8.5" and 1) 1.5"x5"
Bottom Fabric: 1) 2"x8.5" and 1) 1.5"x5"
Backing and batting: roughly 10"x7"
Binding: 2.5"x26"

Assembly:

  • Sew the 1.5"x5" strips together along the 5" length.
  • Press seam open.
  • Trim the short end, if necessary, to have a straight edge, and cut strip into 4 1" rectangles.
  • Decide on the placement of the three 2.5" squares, then sew them together with the 1" rectangles between each square and at the beginning and end.  Be sure that the top fabric is sewn to the top of the side of the square.
  • Press the seams towards the squares.
  • Sew on the 2"x8.5" top and bottom rectangles.
  • Press away from the center.
  • Layer completed mug rug top, batting, and backing.  Baste in your preferred method.  Quilt as desired.
  • Prepare and sew binding as you prefer.

Decadent Mug Cake
*Just a quick note: This cake is RICH.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
3 Tbs. sugar
2 Tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder
Dash of salt
1/4 cup milk
2 Tbs. vegetable oil
1/4 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Spray mug with a non-stick spray and wipe away excess.
Mix the dry ingredients together in a small bowl.
Add the wet ingredients and mix thoroughly with a rubber spatula.
Pour the mixture into the mug, scraping the sides to get every last bit!
Microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute, depending on how "gooey" or "cakey" you want it, and the strength of your microwave.  When in doubt, start with less time and keep heating to your desired texture.

Postage Stamp Checkerboard
Materials:
Fabric A: 20) 1.5" squares
Fabric B: 20) 1.5" squares
Backing and batting: roughly 10"x7"
Binding: 2.5x26"

Assembly:
* You can either lay out exactly where each square will go, or simply alternate fabrics as you sew each row.

  • Start three rows with Fabric A and two rows with Fabric B.
  • Sew 5 rows, each with 8 squares, alternating Fabric A and B.
  • After all rows are sewn, press rows 1, 3, and 5 to the left and rows 2 and 4 to the right.
  • Sew each row together, matching and pinning the seams.  Diligent pinning at this stage will greatly improve the accuracy of the checkerboard!
  • Press seams open.
  • Layer completed mug rug top, batting, and backing.  Baste in your preferred method.  Quilt as desired.
  • Prepare and sew binding as you prefer.
